Ceramic Coating Aftercare: What to Do in the First Year

A fresh coating is still curing when you collect the car, and the first weeks set its habits for life. This is the simple calendar — first 48 hours, first wash, monthly rhythm, annual check — that keeps it performing.

Ceramic coating leaves the workshop hard but not finished: the layer continues to cure and fully harden over the following days, reaching its full chemical resistance over roughly the first one to two weeks. Most early coating problems — water spots locked in during cure, chemical damage in week one — are aftercare problems, not application problems, and they are entirely avoidable.

After the cure window, aftercare settles into a rhythm so simple it fits on an index card: wash gently every few weeks, deal with bird lime the day it lands, keep harsh chemicals and automatic washes away forever, and book the annual maintenance visit. Everything else in this guide is detail in service of those five habits.

The curing window: first two weeks

Keep the car dry if you can for the first 24 to 48 hours — garaged is ideal — and if it does get wet, dry standing water off gently rather than leaving it to evaporate into spots while the surface is still tender. Do not wash the car at all in the first week unless it gets genuinely filthy, and keep it away from chemicals: no tar removers, no strong wheel acids, no wash bays.

If bird lime lands during the cure — the classic piece of luck — soften it with water and lift it as described in our washing guide rather than leaving it 'until the coating is ready'. A dropping etches a curing coating faster than a cured one, so prompt gentle removal is the lesser risk by a wide margin.

  • First 48 hours: keep dry where possible, blot standing water
  • First week: no washing unless essential, no chemicals at all
  • First fortnight: gentle hand wash only, pH-neutral products
  • Bird lime during cure: soak and lift immediately, never leave it
  • Avoid sprinklers and hard-water hosing while the layer hardens

The standing rhythm: monthly and yearly

Monthly, the car wants its maintenance wash — foam, two buckets, plush drying — and a walk-around under decent light. That walk-around is the real aftercare skill: catching a stone chip before it rusts a wing edge, spotting film lifting at a corner, noticing one panel's beading fading before its neighbours. Small findings are small bills.

Yearly, the maintenance visit decontaminates the coating properly — iron, tar, mineral deposits — reads each panel's health, and tops up the sacrificial layer where it has thinned. Owners who keep this appointment are the ones whose coatings reach their full quoted life; the visit also refreshes wheel and glass coatings, which wear faster than the paint's.

Frequently asked questions

It rained the day after my coating — is it ruined?

Almost certainly not. Rain within the cure window mainly risks water spotting if drops are left to dry in sun on the tender surface. Dry the car gently when you can, and if spots do appear, they sit in the young coating's surface and are usually removable at the first maintenance wash. Tell us and we will check it at that visit.

When can I first wash the car after coating?

After about a week, gently, with the full maintenance method — foam pre-wash, two buckets, coating-safe shampoo. If the car gets truly filthy before then, a careful rinse and very gentle wash is better than leaving contamination sitting on a curing surface; the rule is gentleness, not a rigid ban.

Can I wax over my ceramic coating?

You can, but there is little point and some downside: wax masks the coating's own water behaviour and gloss character, and cheap spray waxes can leave the surface grabby. If you want a top-up, use a coating-compatible SiO2 spray sealant sparingly — or simply book the maintenance visit, where the right products are used.

What products should I keep at home?

A short list: pH-neutral shampoo, a pre-wash foam, two buckets with grit guards, plush wash mitts and drying towels, a coating-safe quick detailer for bird lime emergencies, and soft cloths. That kit, used with the method in our washing guide, covers everything between professional visits.

How do I know if my coating needs a top-up?

Watch the water after a proper wash. Tight beading and eager sheeting mean health; flat, lazy water on the bonnet and roof — the panels that wear first — means those panels want attention. The annual visit formalises this check panel by panel, so nothing is guessed or sold blind.

Does aftercare differ for matte coatings?

The rhythm is identical — gentle washing, prompt contamination removal, annual check — with matte-specific products throughout and one absolute rule: nothing that adds shine ever touches the car, including well-meaning gifts of wax. Matte aftercare is less about products than about keeping gloss products away.
